Snakes in Washington
Of all the snakes living in Washington, just one, the prairie or western rattlesnake, is venomous. They primarily occupy the eastern part, especially in the shrub-steppes area, near rocks exposed to the sun. Of the non-venomous snakes, the state has a standard population of garter snakes. The common garter and the western terrestrial garter along with its subspecies mostly occupy the western parts of Washington. The gopher snake, growing to a length of 6 feet, is the largest snake here.
