Snakes in Perth
When it comes to snake season, Perth witnesses snakes all year round, not just during the summertime. The most common snakes seen in the city almost all-year round are the tiger snake species and dugite, both known to deliver venomous bites.
According to researchers, Perth’s wetlands are home to many tiger snakes, primarily black with a yellow belly or yellow bands. However, the sightings of a tiger snake shouldn’t result in a panic as they also want to flee from human contact and wouldn’t attack unless provoked or agitated. The dugite, having a black, scaly appearance, is also found around beaches in Perth, mostly making coastal dunes and wetlands its habitat.
One place near Perth where one could find a significant population of snakes, around 400, is the nature reserve, Carnac Island. The tiger snakes live here in abundance, with three of them in a span of 25 sq.m.
