Snakes in North Dakota
The prairie rattlesnake, North Dakota’s only venomous species, mainly inhabits the southwestern part of the state, along grasslands, sagebrush, and rocky ledges. The garter snake species, plains garter, and standard garter are most commonly found in almost all counties near freshwater sources, grasslands, and prairies. However, amongst the two, the former, i.e., the plains garter snakes, with a brown or tan body marked with three stripes, is more commonly spotted.
